Education:
The Department of Education has recently released the following instructions on how schools could reopen and what options lie ahead for parents. School principals will ultimately make final decisions on a model that will best work for their teachers and students based on feedback from all involved stakeholders. More importantly, families will have the choice of keeping their children safe indoors in a fully-remote learning format. In addition, families who opt for fully-remote learning will be able to revisit this decision at quarterly intervals during the school year, and will have the option to opt back into in-person learning if they so wish.
This fall, your child’s school will offer a combination of in-person and remote learning. You can choose from two options:
1. 100% Remote Learning: Opt in to have your child learn 100% remotely (all online, from home). To choose this option for your child, fill out and submit this FORM. If you are having difficulties completing this form online, call 311.
OR
2. Combination of In-Person and Remote Learning: Your child can follow their school’s schedule, a mix of in-person days at school and remote learning days from home. To choose this option, no action is needed: your school will be in touch about its schedule and programming plans in the coming weeks. Please visit the Return to School 2020 pages on the website for more information.
Changing Preferences
- If you chose 100% Remote Learning but want to change your child’s preference back to Blended Learning, complete this form again by August 7.
- After August 7, any family who chose 100% Remote Learning will have the option to change back to Blended Learning at a few specific times during the school year.
See below for proposed Programming Models. Feel free to reply back or reach our office at 917 521-2616 with your questions.
Model One
Taking into account the number of students and social distancing rules, schools able to accommodate at least 50% of their student population would hold in-person instruction for the same two days every week, as well as every other Monday. This amounts to a total of five days of in-person instruction at eligible schools every two weeks. Under this model, there would be two in-person student groups and one fully remote student group receiving instruction consecutively. All students would participate in remote learning for non-in-person days. This model would be available to elementary, middle, and high schools. |
|
Model Two Taking into account the number of students and social distancing rules, schools able to accommodate roughly one-third of their student population would hold in-person instruction 1-2 days per week. This amounts to a total of five days in-person every three weeks. To maximize consistency, this day would be the same each week. Students would participate in remote learning for non-in-person days. This model is recommended by the Chancellor as it provides one consistent day each week. This model would be available to elementary, middle, and high schools. |
|
Model Three This model serves the same number of students as Model Two, also providing five days in-person every three weeks but with a different cadence and schedule. Model Three offers an option for a six-day rotation, allowing students to be in-person two days and remote four days in a six-day cycle. This model would be available to middle and high schools. |

Unemployment Updates
In the upcoming weeks, the supplemental unemployment benefits of $600 per week that millions of families have been relying on will no longer be in effect. This will threaten the livelihood of millions of people who are still facing the financial impacts of COVID-19. The Federal Government must act to ensure that they pass another Federal Stimulus Bill that will help all New Yorkers regardless of status. |
