LVV: Illegitimate obstacles for Albin Kurti’s general election candidacy

On the 22nd of January, in opposition to the recommendations of its Office for Political Party Registration and Certification, Kosova’s Central Election Committee (CEC) failed to certify Albin Kurti’s candidacy for the 14^th of February snap elections. The decision was taken when the Chairperson of CEC and delegates from EPP member, LDK and ECR member PDK did not vote to certify the list of candidates from Lëvizja VETËVENDOSJE! (LVV.)

Even though the whole list of LVV was not certified, the goal of the old regime is to prohibit Albin Kurti from running. This comes as a reaction to the high support that LVV and Albin Kurti enjoy among the people (the latest polls have put LVV at 54 %.)

As we are aware that authoritarian regimes do not happen overnight, we see this decision as yet another symptom of the captured state of Kosova, which has been a reality for every citizen for over 20 years. While the old elites have failed to gain the support of the citizens, they are using their clientele structures to put obstacles for LVV and Albin Kurti.

Since there is no decision by any court that prohibits Kurti and others to participate in elections, and while the CEC does not have the competence and authority to take this human right, we have appealed its decision and we are hopeful that at the end, the judicial instances will come with a just decision.
